The typical Indian breakfast, poha, plain paratha, white bread, upma, is delicious and almost entirely carbs. If you're trying to build muscle, breakfast is the meal most people waste. Getting 25 to 35g of protein into your first meal makes hitting your daily target far easier. Here are eight ways to do it without living on eggs and whey.
Aim for roughly 1.6g of protein per kg of bodyweight across the day (see our full protein guide). Breakfast is where most people fall behind, so let's fix it.
Vegetarian options
1. Besan chilla (25g+)
Two to three besan chillas made from gram flour are one of the highest-protein veg breakfasts going. Add grated paneer or veggies to the batter for more. Cheap, fast, filling.
2. Paneer bhurji with roti (25-30g)
Scrambled paneer with onions, tomato, and spices, wrapped in a roti or eaten with toast. Paneer is one of the best vegetarian protein sources available in India.
3. Curd + fruit + nuts (15-20g)
A big bowl of curd (or Greek yogurt for more protein), with banana, and a handful of nuts. Add a scoop of whey to the yogurt if you want to push it higher.
4. Moong dal chilla or sprouts chaat (15-20g)
Sprouts and moong-based breakfasts add plant protein and fibre. Great alongside curd.
5. Oats with milk and peanut butter (18-22g)
Oats cooked in milk (not water), topped with peanut butter and a scoop of whey. Fast, filling, and easy to scale up for hardgainers.
Non-vegetarian options
6. Egg bhurji or omelette (20-25g)
Three-egg bhurji or omelette loaded with veggies, with a roti or toast. The classic, and for good reason.
7. Boiled eggs + a carb (18-24g)
Three boiled eggs plus your usual poha or paratha. The laziest upgrade: don't change your breakfast, just add eggs to it.
8. Anda paratha (25g+)
Anda paratha, egg cooked into a paratha, is a north-Indian favourite that's genuinely high protein and filling.
The one principle behind all of these
Notice the pattern: you don't have to abandon your normal breakfast. Add a protein source to what you already eat. Poha stays poha, just add eggs or a glass of milk. Paratha stays paratha, just make it anda paratha or eat curd alongside. Small upgrades, big difference over a week.
